ABSTRACT

Antonovski describes salutogenic environments as ones which help to stimulate the mind. The qualities of the environment together with the people within it affect human physical and mental performance and these qualities should always be given a high priority. Well-being depends on the management ethos of the organisation, the social ambience and personal factors, but the physical environment also has a major role to play. Health is the result of a complex interaction between the physiological, psychological, personal and organisational resources available to individuals and the stress placed upon them by their physical and social environment at work and home. Well-being is a more comprehensive term than comfort. Heschong presents a set of essays entitled Beyond Environmental Comfort, which stretch the meaning of comfort into new directions. The impact of the environment on people is difficult to predict because the environment has an effect which is more than the sum of its parts.
