ABSTRACT

Research on human decision-making and productivity has shown that cognitive variables are an important determinant of efficiency levels. The Strategic Management Simulations (SMS) product has a long history in assessing human decision-making and its impact on job performance and human productivity. The SMS measures complex human behaviors required for effectiveness in many workplace settings. The SMS simulation has been used to test the impacts of Indoor air quality (IAQ) on decision-making performance. IAQ is a broad umbrella term that covers a wide range of exposures that may be experienced in the office. IAQ is affected by buildings' materials and furnishings breaking down or off-gassing in the space. Clearly owners' perceptions of tenant expectations are misaligned with reality, and tenants are lacking trust in owners' decision-making around IAQ. The tenant receives the benefits of improved air quality, which far outweigh the costs of improving IAQ. The costs of improving IAQ are often perceived to be greater than they are in practice.
