ABSTRACT

In recent years the tensions between national and supranational decision making in the EU have become ever more pronounced as they have also become associated with a higher degree of complexity. The political dividing lines informing such tensions concern a wide range of issues dealt with at the European level. At the same time, EU Member States are a highly heterogeneous group of polities, with their own political cultures and sensitivities, including governments with sometimes significantly different interpretations of what the European project is and what it can be.
