ABSTRACT

Graphic design is a creative process that combines text and images to communicate ideas or tell a story. Elements of design include shapes, color, typography, and images; composition arranges these elements together into a whole. The authors perceive color not as an absolute but as a difference between the surrounding color and the color we are focusing on. They use contrast between text and background, both to attract attention and to make our text legible. A typeface is a family of fonts; a font is a subset of a typeface with a particular size and weight. Helvetica bold and Helvetica italic are fonts which are part of the Helvetica typeface. Design principles in graphic design have much in common with principles of wayfinding. The golden section, or golden ratio, has been used by architects and designers since the ancient Greeks first recognized its role in nature and its proportions in the human body.
