ABSTRACT

This chapter examines three civil society organizations (CSOs) in particular that contributed to the conflict resolution, reconciliation, and peace process, namely Gerakan Baku Bae, Tim 20 Wayame, and Gerakan Perempuan Peduli. International institutions and Non-governmental organizations (NGOs), in collaboration with local counterparts, have also played a role in the process of reconciliation and reconstruction. Some commentators erroneously said that the peaceful Wayame was not the product of voluntary grassroots reconciliation but an order from the government and military elites to protect their properties in the region. The Baku Bae movement became one of the most visible civil society responses to the mass violence. The Bake Bae moderators encouraged more general exchanges about common experiences, and tried to bring discussions around to the true nature of the conflict. Both the Christians and Muslims saw that embracing the simple technique of the Baku Bae dialogue, cooperation, finding common ground in neutral centers helped to reduce the polarized atmosphere.
