ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the tumultuous events of January 2011 and the subsequent parliamentary electoral victory of the Muslim Brotherhood, alongside Islamist competitors such as the new Salafi and Sufi parties, in the wake of the Mubarak regime. It explores the perilous path that the movement attempted to navigate as it assumed parliamentary power in a country in transition not only from Mubarak's tyranny but also from the absolutist domination of the Egyptian military over core institutions and industries of the state. The chapter examines the role of the Muslim Brotherhood as it sought to access power and government in Egypt during a tumultuous period of transition in the country. It also assesses the trajectory of the Muslim Brotherhood in the post-Morsi era as it has attempted to negotiate its own survival. The chapter reviews the Brotherhood and its future prospects as it continues to navigate its new role in Egypt.
