Pages 10

The major macro-explanation for right-wing extremism introduces a subtle but important twist to the causal link said to exist between modernization and extremism. Whereas the approach discussed earlier-mass or mob theoryargues that the destabilizing effects of modernization unleash a quest for community substitutes, macro-level theory holds that right-wing radicalism grows from a revolt against modernization. Here, ultra-right activism is pictured not as an unconscious reaction to historical upheaval but as a relatively conscious rebellion against it.
