Far-Right Fantasy 4: False Consciousness
Pages 6

The technical term for false consciousness is alienation, which originally referred to how manufactured goods have the eerie quality of rebounding back to haunt their makers (Marx, 1999 [1844]). That is, they return to “deform their formers”: hindering, poisoning, injuring and, in some cases, killing those who design and fabricate them. Originally, the concept was applied to steel goods, agricultural wares, and armaments, but the idea has since been generalized to encompass all cultural products, from languages and legal systems, to art forms, religions, and folkways (Berger & Luckmann, 1967).
