ABSTRACT

The rise in defamation cases linked to the internet has been inevitable, where blogs or tweets have failed to put in place the same kind of pre-publication controls that traditional media use. When Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, discovered that his wife was expecting a baby in August 2015, he chose to announce the news on Facebook. The media regularly seize photos and personal details from social networking accounts in times of distress or crisis. Social media platforms have changed the media landscape forever. Information can easily be transmitted and received via a large number of platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Snapchat and many ever-emerging new platforms. Social media trolls who set up fake profiles under their victims' names in order to harass them will face criminal charges. There have been systemic failures of UK police forces to tackle the issue of trolling.
