ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the Leveson recommendations, how many have been implemented, the complexities which ensued regarding different press regulators and how many newspapers have actually signed up to the various regulatory bodies. It looks at the new print press regulator Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) and its rival organization Impress. While IPSO has been backed by the vast majority of the UK press industry – except the Guardian, Independent and the Financial Times – Impress has so far only attracted independent and small publications. The chapter explores relatively new United Kingdom (UK) consumer and competition regulatory authority, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), an independent non-ministerial government department with responsibility for carrying out investigations into mergers, cartels and price fixing. The CMA is a non-ministerial UK government department responsible for strengthening business competition and preventing and reducing anti-competitive activities. The CMA has a wide range of tools available to make markets work well for consumers, businesses and the economy.
