ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview with practical examples and explanations of approaches to language teacher education using digital and online tools and platforms. We consider the history of digital technology in language and teacher education, addressing the challenges and opportunities that contemporary affordances present to teacher educators. We look at variables such as time and timing; interaction; design and structure; pathways, platforms and tools; and assessment, discussing their combination in blended and fully online teacher education programmes small and large. We consider the implications of these variables for individuals and organisations, for trainers and trainees, and for those tasked with making decisions on implementation of digital teacher education strategy and practice. We end with a consideration of potential versus principles, and consider what new technologies may support or disrupt the evolution of language teacher education in coming years. The chapter contains a number of descriptions of, and references to, tools and activities used in current teacher education online courses, and an extensive list of third-party resources and sites for readers to explore in more depth.
