ABSTRACT

In much the same way as technology provides opportunities to access high quality resources for language learning, it has enormous potential to support English language teacher education. Through a growing number of platforms (e.g. online, mobile, TV and radio, social media), teachers can access resources and tools to develop their skills and subject knowledge. This chapter focuses on teachers and teacher educators using technology to facilitate professional development, with some brief discussion on the crossover in skills development for the use of technology with students in the classroom (face-to-face or otherwise). It explores the various ways that ICT could be used for these purposes, alongside a summary of the benefits, key issues and challenges that are specific to these modes of engagement. Three short case studies are presented and discussed, exemplifying the various ways that technology can be utilised in this regard. The chapter concludes with a consideration of the enabling factors that might be prioritised by individuals, institutions and governments when considering the deployment of technology to facilitate teacher development, to increase potential impact.
