ABSTRACT

In terms of their election or appointment to a school board, board members put themselves out there in a sense, in a way that exposes them to critique and consternation. Friends, neighbors, clients, and customers all see them in a new role. And by virtue of some strange circumstance, it seems that everyone who has gone to school believes they are experts at knowing how schools should be run. Restaurants and schools have a lot in common. The fact that it is not nearly as easy to run a restaurant or lead a school as we might envision is probably the reason that the most common business to close is also a restaurant. This chapter introduces a few metaphors in leadership and governance that involve bows, arrows, quivers, and shields. It seems like everyone nowadays is carrying around their bows, arrows, and quivers- ready to shoot at school officials.
