ABSTRACT

Now one of the best ways of creating connections is to let people meet each other face to face so they can discuss the ideas and learn from each other directly. This is particularly important for young geographers close to the thresholds of their careers, for personal contacts forged early on often lead to strong and life-long connections. Unfortunately, the national 'Establishments' invariably devote most of the available travel funds to themselves, the jet-setting 'Call Girls' we met before who have put in their time on the national and international committees, and have finally got their hands on the purse strings. Very seldom does anything of genuine intellectual advance come from the international conferences and meetings of such people. The problem is that very few funds are available for young scholars, even though they will soon form the major part of the fabric of geography in the future.
