ABSTRACT

In July 2014, the Royal Government of Cambodia approved a National Policy for Culture. In broad terms the policy provides a supportive environment in which Cambodian Living Arts (CLA) and other arts organizations can implement activities in the creative and cultural industries. CLA expects that there will be little change to the situation as regards funding and other support mechanisms for the independent arts sector and creative and cultural industries. During the pilot seasons, CLA subsidized both the direct and indirect costs of the production, with some costs being recouped through ticket sales. CLA’s goal was to present to audiences the diversity of Cambodian arts and the creativity of a new generation of young artists. The chapter argues that CLA’s financial model for the production relied on revenues from the tourist market; their higher ticket price would cover the costs and subsidize the lower rate offered to local audience.
