ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses empirical analyses and critical evaluation with examples from both of these practitioner-led and women-led CIM subfields. It presents overview the now somewhat relatively well-trodden research path examining CIM use for pregnancy, labour and birth. The book examines the empirical evidence for the efficacy of CIM treatments in the menopause as well as the prevalence, patterns and decision-making of menopausal women regarding CIM use. It introduces contemporary guidelines on CIM use and outlines implications of a number of noteworthy clinical and practice-based issues regarding CIM provision in menopausal care. The book discusses three diverse but inextricably interwoven perspectives related to women as they age and their relationship to CIM. It also examines the current status and future potential of CIM for women's cancers. The book introduces new empirical findings regarding the use of CIM self-care among women with osteoarthritis and osteoporosis.
