ABSTRACT

This chapter will explore the needs of prison officers to preserve security, protect individuals and maintain order in custody, which at times can be contradictory to the Statement of Purpose of looking after prisoners with humanity and helping them to lead law abiding and useful lives both in custody and after release. The concept of wearing these two ‘hats’ will be discussed, with personal reflections given to experiences of working with women who have been identified within the Offender Personality Disorder Pathway.
