ABSTRACT

Theory is a common element of almost all planning courses at the undergraduate and graduate level. However, there is some variety as to how theory is taught, including the choice of texts and the placement of theory in the curriculum. This chapter explores the teaching of planning theory through a comparison of four university-based programs in China. Having situated theory in the context of Chinese planning education more broadly, the chapter notes how the different faculties approach the purpose of teaching theory, vary in their teaching styles and organization, and incorporate theory into the larger planning curricula.
