ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book. The book is aimed chiefly at undergraduate Education Studies students. It offers an accessible format designed to both introduce and support increasingly sophisticated understandings of educational issues; involving a wide range of key concepts central to the subject. Involving aspects of education that include economics, history, philosophy, psychology and sociology, among others, approaches to the subject have frequently involved the exploration of key issues, debates and themes. Beginning with its origins and current usage, each concept entry provides students with a succinct background explanation and its significance for education. In doing this, each concept is developed at three levels, increasing in complexity and mirroring important lines of intellectual progression inherent in undergraduate study. Levels four, five and six of the three-year degree are represented by an introductory 'starting' symbol followed by engagement and ultimately moving towards a degree of fluency.
