ABSTRACT

Transformation is a key concept in a variety of disciplines, from science to religion. In education, it can be regarded as a key concept in that any claim to a meaningful education will almost certainly involve personal transformation. The key currency of transformation can then be understood in light of the problematic nature of education, with regard to the mainstream and hegemonic, authoritarian global model of the schooling system and for which a transformation of education as system is being sought. Transformation can be regarded as an expansion of, or, at least, change in consciousness. This can occur in different ways in and through education, although different disciplinary lenses can help identification of what occurs and why. Transformation needs conditions of social justice and fairness to be in place for the impact of 'mere' education to effect change in conscious awareness of self and others.
