ABSTRACT

The term 'race' has a biological origin, having been used to distinguish individuals and groups from each other. However, from a biological/genetic perspective, there are almost no substantial distinctions between different human groups. Phenomena such as skin, hair and eye colour, height, and so on, are inherited traits that have varied gradually with human migration across the planet. As a social and cultural category, race is used to identify groups facing differential social and political experience based on their group identity. Racism is described as a process resulting from prejudice and holding power to affect the lives of others by creating advantage, privilege and unearned social power for some at the expense of others. Within education, race has been used to explore differing social experiences and to interrogate practices which serve to disadvantage groups at a personal, structural and institutional level.
