ABSTRACT

This chapter explains about the study of Palestine and Palestinian society in the context of recent theoretical and methodological advances in social science that span colonialism, Foucauldian treatment of power, constructivism, the problem of order in explicating the nature of violence in ethnically divided regions, and transnationalism. Ethnographic studies of marginalised communities such as refugees and people living under occupation demonstrate the importance of anthropological and ethnographic research in uncovering everyday experiences, particularly with regard to strategies of coping and resistance among subaltern groups. Al-Awda, the Palestine Right to Return Coalition, which has branches worldwide, is dedicated to mobilising Palestinian communities in the diaspora through public education and commemoration of key Palestinian historical events. With a focus on Arab education within Israel, Human Rights Watch in New York has produced an extensive report on the impact of discriminatory state policies on Arab education within Israel.
