ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the extreme sport experience in terms of the experiential given-ness of the self, where given-ness refers to the taken-for-granted world of immediate experience and self is described as 'becoming who you already are'. It investigates what is already known about the experience from non-phenomenological studies in order to lay the foundations for a more nuanced phenomenological explication. The chapter argues that the extreme sport experience might be an overt expression of a participant's sense of being, enabling a deeper understanding of a participant's core or authentic self. Identity formation has also been associated with a sense of self as relating to nature. The chapter also argues that the extreme sport experience is one way of achieving a connection with nature which in turn reveals who we are, a becoming of what we already are.
