ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I am particularly concerned with the conceptualisation, creation, and experience of contemporary movement arts in India. This chapter attempts to shed light on some of the thoughts and concerns that have influenced the evolving training methodologies for movement arts. As this is, in many ways, closely linked to my own artistic practice, I will be sharing some life experiences and the underlying beliefs that govern them. In an effort to draw on multiple sources that have colored my artistic journey, the chapter refers to a few examples of the workings of some of the physical and performance traditions of India, as well as thoughts and practices from other cultures, including contemporary and digital cultures. I hope this will give some insight into the processes that are involved in the making and receiving of a performance work.
