ABSTRACT

From a broad perspective, removed from the close contact with the theories, one can examine the thematic continuities and discontinuities that emerge. The theoretical orientations as described, up to this point, emphasize different sides of the scientific attitude. A stereotyped, and rather simplistic, definition of science is that the research proceeds in a detached, objective way and attempts to predict behavior in matter, animals, or humans. Today many scientists acknowledge that much of what they study cannot be predicted, increasingly pointing to the improvisatory elements in any research project. The creative, affective accents are most apparent in phenomenology and experiential ethnomusicology. In these approaches, the nuances of individual performance are noticed and analyzed. Literary and dramaturgical theories attend, in some instances, to the creative and affective. Some oral history and ethnohistory also focus on the creative and affective aspects.
