ABSTRACT

Building bridges to the public is perhaps the most important task of any president. Without public support for their programs, presidents will inevitably falter in office and fail to be reelected. There is no substitute for public support, for without it few presidents are able to survive. Their programs languish in Congress and the public seeks new leadership at the next election. Presidents need the support of the American public not just on election day but throughout their terms in office.
