If this argument is correct, then it should be observable. For example, researchers should find that the occupational settings of blue-and white-collar people are similar, that they have similar life chances (as indicated by, say, their incomes), and as a result that they have similar lifestyles. Such findings would mean that a separate analysis of the working class, like that undertaken here, is unnecessary because most people in the United States, excluding the very rich and the poor, are reasonably affluent and middle class.
