ABSTRACT
In this chapter, our study of rhythm focuses on atypical divisions of the beat. In simple meters where the beat is a quarter note, an eighth-note triplet can be used to divide the beat into three parts rather than the normal division into two parts. In compound meters, a duplet (grouping of two notes) allows the beat to be divided into two parts in contrast to the expected division into three parts.
