Who Brought the Enchiladas to My Bar Mitzvah?
How have these changes in immigration law affected religion in the United States? Whereas the vast majority of all voluntary immigrants prior to 1965 were from Europe and Canada (and nearly all were Christian or Jewish), the vast majority of immigrants since 1965 have been from Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. In 1900, the top countries of origin for immigrants were Italy, Russia, Hungary, Austria, and the United Kingdom-all European. From 2000 to 2010, the top countries of origin for immigrants were Mexico, India, China, Guatemala, Cuba, and Korea. Clearly, none of these countries is European. About 1 million immigrants per year legally enter the United States. They and their children are diversifying the racial and ethnic composition of the nation and now account for most of its population growth.
