ABSTRACT

People have been hunting large animals on the Plains for at least 12,000 years. It is the place of gigantic herds of bison, of some of the earliest Paleoindian sites, and of the majestic Indian mounted on his horse, so well known around the world. While most people view the Plains as the place where highly mobile people hunted bison from horseback, that specific adaptation is very recent: for most of prehistory, people hunted bison on foot. After 2,000 years ago, some Plains groups adopted corn agriculture.
