ABSTRACT
This chapter is concerned with some of the external in uences that have had an effect on post-tonal music. These in uences came chie y from three sources:
The Past
Neoclassicism Quotation, paraphrase, and collage
The Present
Folk music Jazz Rock
The Unfamiliar
Music from other cultures
There is little new technical information in this chapter, and few exercises follow it. In many ways it deals more with music history than with music theory. But the currents outlined here are important ones, and they had a signi cant role in shaping the sound of post-tonal music.
