ABSTRACT
Before beginning our study of the materials of music since 1900, we will rst look back brie y at what happened to the system of triadic tonality, the primary organizing force in the music of the preceding three centuries. In the course of doing this, we will nd it convenient to introduce a few terms that may be new to you. Throughout this book, new terms will appear in boldface type the rst time they are used in the text.
