ABSTRACT

RESPONDING TO MESSAGES: PRINCIPLES Unless you listen well, it is impossible to construct an effective message-a response that has meaning for both you and your partner. Each of Chapters 3 through 8 has opened with thoughts on how situation and purpose affect the degree to which each component of the listening process is relevant. You’ll recall that situations include intrapersonal, interpersonal, small group, public, and mediated. From our perspective, speaking and listening are inseparable dimensions of a relational communication process that can take place on each of these levels.
