ABSTRACT

Several years ago, a popular American politician took a trip to Latin America. Upon his arrival at the airport, he emerged from the airplane, stood at the top of the loading ramp, and waved to the people awaiting his arrival. Someone shouted out, asking him how his trip had been. He responded by flashing the common “OK” gesture. Shortly thereafter he left the airport and engaged in a brief visit with a local political leader. Following that visit, he went to the major university in the area and delivered an address on behalf on the American people. During his talk, he emphasized that the United States was most interested in helping this neighboring country through economic aid that would help develop the economy and relieve the difficult economic surroundings of the poor. His speech, in fact his entire visit, was a disaster.
