ABSTRACT
Every day classroom teachers are responsible for reaching and engaging students. This process of "engaging students" typically involves overcoming a number of potential barriers, including students' lack of attention, enthusiasm, or interest in the
material being taught. Even if these problems are minimal in one's classroom, an additional challenge is effectively explaining course material. Fortunately, instructional communication research has identified a number of techniques teachers can adopt to overcome these challenges.
