ABSTRACT

Efforts must be made to identify appropriate cultures for testing a theory and to develop or select measures and procedures that will ensure cross-cultural comparisons are based on equivalent data. Researchers of culture and psychology often include in their studies a measure of ethnic identity. Psychologists have long emphasized objectivity in research and have expressed concern about bias that stems from the researcher being too close to the groups they are studying. If psychology as a discipline is to become more inclusive and less culturally biased, those who read and conduct psychological research will need to become better able to identify and avoid bias in the design of psychological research. The purpose of the activity is to familiarize students with some of the forms of bias that frequently occur in studying psychological processes. Designing research that compares cultures on some psychological phenomenon involves several steps beyond what is required for research within a single culture.
