ABSTRACT

Callimicos are considered an endangered species by some classification systems (United States Endangered Species Act: Littel 1992) while other systems have determined the species to be near threatened but not endangered (IUCN 2006 Red list: www.redlist.org, May 4, 2006). Determining a species’ conservation status can be difficult and may vary depending on the criteria used (Arita, Robinson, and Redford 1990; Dobson and Yu 1993; Gaston 1994; Rabinowitz, Cairns, and Dillon 1981) and the spatial scale being considered (Quinn, Gaston, and Arnold 1996). The problem with assessing the status of callimicos is that few data are available on its population density, habitat requirements, and geographic distribution. Until these data are available the conservation strategies we adopt for this species will be provisional.
