ABSTRACT

Chapter 14 moves away from the basic principles of archaeological research and looks

at the management of the archaeological record through cultural resource management

(CRM). We summarize the key U.S. federal legislation that encompasses the protection

of archaeological sites, then describe the three stages of CRM investigation that con-

stitute compliance with federal law. Then we cover issues that confront CRM, issues

of research as opposed to management, and the four basic issues surrounding effective

management of the past. Native Americans play an important role in CRM, while pub-

lic archaeology is a rapidly expanding part of the discipline, reflected in a new concern

for stakeholders in the past as well as in archaeological tourism.
