Voting Behavior and Elections

In 1984, during his campaign for the presidency, Jesse Jackson would frequently tell black audiences, “Hands that picked cotton can now pick presidents.” The African American vote was critical in picking the president in 2008 and 2012. To understand the significance of the black vote in American politics, we must place the phenomenon in its historical and systemic contexts.
