TwoimportantlessonscanbelearnedfromScudder'sexperience.First,tosee anythingsignificantinanobject(inourcase,arhetoricalmessage),youmust focusyourattentiononthatobjectforalongtime,longerthanyouthinkyou canorneed,sothatyoucandescribepreciselythoseelementsthatarerelevant andimportant.Second,toseeanythingofsignificanceinanobjectyoumust examinethatobjectagainstotherthings.EachnewfishaddedtoScudder'stray servedtodefineandexpandacontextforthefactsScudderhadcollected.In ourcaseasmessageanalysts,wemustlookatmessagesagainstthecontextin whichtheywereconstructed,aswellasagainstothermessagesandtheory.
