ABSTRACT

The current DSM recognizes the two factors of inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity, and uses the label “AttentionDeficit/Hyperactivity” (American Psychiatry Association, 2013). Examples of symptoms of inattention are:

• makes careless mistakes in school or at work • seems to not listen when spoken to • fails to follow through on instructions, chores, etc. • has difficulty in organizing activities • is distracted by extraneous stimuli

Hyperactivity and impulsivity are exemplified by:

• fidgets with hands or feet or squirms in seat • runs about inappropriately • talks excessively • has difficulty in waiting one’s turn • interrupts or intrudes on others

Depending on the symptom presentation a child is diagnosed into one of three subtypes: Predominately Inattentive (ADHD-I), Predominately Hyperactive/ Impulsive (ADHD-HI), and Combined (ADHD-C) that shows both factors.
