ABSTRACT

Closely related to the process of taking a perspective-and sharing its benefits and limitations-is the process of theory construction. Simply put, a theory is a formal, integrated set of principles or propositions that explains phenomena. Although the term “theories” may be used casually to mean a hunch or educated guess, scientific theories are supported by accepted evidence that often has accumulated gradually. Moreover, theories provide formal propositions that can be tested, thereby advancing knowledge. Because they provide concepts and formal propositions that can be tested, theories are highly valued by researchers and clinicians.
