ABSTRACT

The winds of recent globalisation which began to blow near the end resurrected the value of place goods. The trajectory of place goods of India has shown that many gained name and fame for the place they hailed from. A thought which is aired is that the economy is globalising, politics is moving towards regionalism and society is localising. This trend enlarges the scope and importance of place. Within these larger trends and forces for the local is situated a fight for goods with place-bound identity linked to the origin and thus Geographical Indications. The issue of Geographical Indications did not receive a serious hearing. Even after the signing of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), the attempts to strengthen the protection of Geographical Indications remained weak. The objective of the GATT was to reduce the barriers of international trade through the reduction of tariffs, quotas and subsidies.
