ABSTRACT

India is a land of astonishing diversity. Diversity gives scope to search for place goods: A textile line drawn between the South where the weave is an integral part of the woven fabric, and the North where there is an extra weft in its weaving. A rather continuous belt of embroidery emerges in the states of Gujarat and Rajasthan. India offers a plethora of ways to colour the fabric. Tie and dye refers to the technique of producing a pattern in a fabric by partly dyeing the threads before weaving. There are more than 23 million craftsmen engaged in different crafts sectors and estimated that there are over 360 crafts clusters in India. The district of Kachchh records as many as 13 different crafts ranging from painted terracotta, Kachchi embroidery, Rogan paintings, bandhani dyeing to Ajrakh printing to silver work and bell making.
