ABSTRACT

The romance of an adventure comedy calls for the completion of a task, a challenge, or a quest. It successfully navigates through various dangers, toils, cares, and troubles, keeping the spectators on the edge of their chairs and then releasing them in howls of laughter. Adventure comedies offer roller-coaster rides, providing suspense or thrill that set us up before the comic relief. The roller-coaster thrills of adventure comedy borrow much of their energy from the wild stories of Moses challenging Pharaoh or Samson battling the Philistines. The comic adventures of Jonah provide one of the best topsy-turvy stories in all of Scripture. The telos of his adventure is satisfied for the people and cows of Nineveh, a happy ending is had by all. The adventures of comedy take one through rough patches, through valleys of shadows of death and even death itself, but like Frye's U-shaped curve of archetypal comedy, bring one up to a joyous, even laughing, place.
