ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to (1) explicate the link between leadership development and employee wellbeing, (2) present a more systematic approach to thinking and planning leadership training that can impact on employees, and in the process (3) develop pointers for research and good practice. It summarizes the evidence on the effects of leadership development programs on employee health and wellbeing. The chapter presents ways by which leadership development can be achieved in organizations in order to support employee wellbeing. It considers the results from both leader and leadership development programs. The program design process that suggests in the chapter implies that transfer of training is an issue that cannot and should not be considered after ensuring implementation of a program. The chapter describes the implementing the program logic for leadership development and understanding its practical and conceptual nuances can help organizations to further develop actionable practice in leadership development.
