ABSTRACT

This chapter refers to how to achieve a healthy workplace through the participatory approach. With common goals and a common framework, occupational health departments and management can collaborate to deftly initiate efforts to invigorate and improve the organization. The chapter provides a practical guidelines on how to implement improvements to the psychosocial work environment. By improving the psychosocial work environment, organizations can proactively improve the working methods, conditions, or design of work to help reduce employee exposure to workplace stressors at the organization or unit level. An organization-based approach to employee stress management, where the work environment is designed such to improve the psychosocial factors needed to reduce workplace stressors, is one of the most effective strategies to improve the mental health of workers. The chapter focuses on work-related stress in Japan and other developed nations where the demands of work typically relate more closely to those in service and knowledge-based economies.
