ABSTRACT
Chapter 4 examines the interaction of the CTD and the ESD in a real world case study. Examining CNOOC's bid for Unocal will demonstrate how the ESD actually supports the CTD. Through the textual analysis of official and non-official discourse, the chapter illustrates how CNOOC was denied its purchase of Unocal not just because it was foreign, but because it was Chinese. By doing so, the chapter demonstrates how the ESD has served to strengthen and legitimize the CTD.
