ABSTRACT

This chapter intends to explore the full import of historic moment by analyzing the crucial role information has played in the constitution and functioning of the Indian state and polity in both the colonial and postcolonial periods in the country's history. The chapter purpose is to understand the key components of the modern Indian states relationship to information and information technology. Such an inquiry cannot be properly conducted without examining certain key aspects of the colonial state whose legacies formed the foundations of post-Independence India. The Indian government would use planning as a means of strongly promoting the growth of science and technology. The history of information technology in India yields many more striking examples of the power of small networks. The revolution that occurred in Indian telecommunications is usually credited to Sam Pitroda. The last development of note that occurred in the computer/software industry before liberalization was the establishment of software technology parks (STP) to facilitate software exports.
