ABSTRACT
This chapter examines some of the key issues in Buddhist hermeneutics and some of the most influential perspectives on interpretation theory. The key problem is that the Buddha, who lived in the fifth to early fourth century BCE, was credited with thousands of texts, many of which appeared centuries after his death, and exegetes from communities that accepted their authority had to account for doctrinal discrepancies.
